- Project Name: Scoop (First prize winner: Microsoft Surface 3) Scoop is a website that connects clubs to students who have interests that align with the club. Students help clubs find them by creating a Scoop profile and adding topics that they are interested in. Clubs also go on Scoop and create a profile and adds tags that correlate with the vision and mission of their club. Clubs then can see students who are interested in their club by seeing what students have matching tags. With this information, clubs can do more targeted marketing and reach out to the individuals who would enjoy their club. We hope Scoop can improve social life and connect people to their interests.
- Project Name: Teacher Assistant (Second prize winner: Microsoft Band 2) Inspired by an AI bot created by a computer science teacher to have his own TA, I wanted to give this ability to to every teacher in any school. Each teacher is given a custom classifier which learns every time a back-and-forth conversation happens between a teacher and student. It is first able to analyze and learn from previous interactions, then learn from conversations that happen in real time. (fast learning speed) Overtime, a teachers classifier can become so populated and complex that it would be able to answer a majority of both general and very specific questions asked by students.
- Project Name: HackaGarden (Third prize winner: Star Wars BB8 robot) This mobile web app helps people new to gardening have a successful gardening experience, by designing layouts to grow their chosen vegetables based on principles of Square Foot and companion gardening. It leads the new gardener away from mistakes that can ruin a gardening experience, by prompting for the specific season, the plot size and orientation, and vegetables from a list appropriate to the season. The app also warns against certain plant combinations, such as not planting potatoes near onions, and suggests additions, such as adding nasturtiums (which provide some insect control and are edible). Once the layout is accepted, the app can also display the list and counts of all plants, and save it in the database and/or device to refer to it later.
